Stockport was also at the centre of the country's hatting industry which by 1884 was exporting more than six million hats a year.

In December 1997 the last Stockport hat works closed. The town's hatting heritage is preserved at 'Hat Works the Museum of Hatting'. Hat Works is the UK’s only museum dedicated solely to the hatting industry, hats and headwear! The museum was developed as a lottery funded regeneration project in Stockport, one of Manchester's leading hatting towns.

During the WWII a labyrinth of air raid shelters was carved into sandstone cliffs in Stockport town centre. Up to 7,000 people used them to shelter from German bombing raids. After lying forgotten for many years, the tunnels are now open to the public.
